Tear off the “spontaneous combustion” label of new energy cars
The reasons behind these accidents all point to the safety of power batteries, and excessive pursuit of the high energy density of ternary lithium batteries has become the target.
On March 29, Wang Chuanfu said at the blade battery conference: “‘Blade battery’ will completely erase the word ‘spontaneous combustion’ from the dictionary of new energy cars. “
The blade battery is the latest super lithium iron phosphate battery developed by BYD. BYD has made the battery cell into a “blade” shape. The length of the “blade” can be customized according to the size of the battery pack. The longest can be more than 2 meters. This allows the blade battery to skip the “module” and form a battery pack directly.
Why is the blade battery safe? The relevant person in charge of BYD said in an interview with a reporter from China City News that the battery mainly provides safety protection through a full range of high-temperature “ceramic battery” technology.
“We use high-temperature ceramic coatings with high-temperature resistance and excellent insulation properties at high-risk safety sites, such as pole-ear ceramics and ceramic poles, to greatly improve the safety performance of BYD blade batteries.” The above-mentioned person in charge said, “The substantial improvement in safety performance has made BYD more confident in conducting acupuncture tests. In BYD’s internal acupuncture tests on blade batteries, the safety performance of blade batteries far exceeded design expectations.”
In addition to the high safety features, the blade battery also has other strong performance. Prior to this, Sun Huajun, deputy general manager of BYD’s affiliated company, Ford Battery, said that for the low-temperature environment in northern winter, the blade battery is equipped with special insulation materials, and its low-temperature resistance will be further strengthened.
Sun Huajun said that under normal circumstances, BYD models equipped with blade batteries can still discharge 90% of electricity at room temperature below minus 10 degrees, and the discharge power is basically the same as that of ternary lithium batteries.
In addition, the blade battery can charge from 10% to 80% in 33 minutes, support electric cars to accelerate from 100 kilometers to 3.9 seconds, cycle charge and discharge more than 3000 times, and can guarantee 1.2 million kilometers.
Not only are domestic brands concerned, but some international brands have also opened the door to BYD batteries. In June last year, Toyota announced that it would purchase batteries from BYD to ensure the supply of power batteries. Subsequently, on July 19, Toyota and BYD established a joint venture company to jointly develop pure electric models of cars and low-chassis SUVs, as well as the power batteries required for the above products.
It is reported that these models will use the Toyota brand and are scheduled to be launched in the Chinese market by 2025. Some insiders analyzed that this series of electric vehicles is likely to carry BYD blade batteries.
For BYD’s battery business, the product’s entry into the world’s first echelon is a milestone step. In this context, the split listing of BYD batteries has also been put on the agenda. Wang Chuanfu has disclosed many times before that he will conduct the IPO of BYD Battery in due course.
The battery business of BYD is also being divested from BYD Group to form an independent company that conducts financial accounting separately. The battery segment is expected to be listed independently around 2022.
